Formed in spring 2004, just as the Libertines were beginning to fall apart, Babyshambles became Pete Doherty’s main vessel for poetic, chaotic rock. What followed was messy, magnetic and very rarely boring: a self-titled debut 7”, the Rough Trade single “Killamangiro”, sold-out U.K. shows, cancellations, headlines, lineup changes, and the kind of rock’n’roll folklore that usually needs several unreliable witnesses. Babyshambles live somewhere between melody and mayhem, with songs that feel half-written in a bedsit, half-shouted from the edge of collapse. In other words: exactly the sort of thing guitars were invented for.
